  • Successfully complete a 300-yard continuous swim, proficiently demonstrating the front crawl and breaststroke.
  • Tread water for 2 consecutive minutes without support.
  • Timed Brick Test: Swim 20-yards, dive down and retrieve a 10-pound brick. Retrieve brick and swim the length of pool, on your back, while remaining above water. Exit the pool without assistance of a ladder or stairs.

  • Tread Water for two minutes without support.
  • Timed Water Activity: Swim 20-yards, dive down and retrieve an underwater object.

Course Facts:
  • Lifeguarding Certificates are valid for two years. Prior to the end of two years, lifeguards must re-certify to keep their certifications current.
  • CPR/AED Training is included within the Lifeguarding Course. CPR must be renewed annually. Lifeguards can take CPR/AED training as a standalone course annually. The lifeguarding card reads, “CPR valid for 2 years.” The NYS Board of Health requires lifeguards to be re-certified in CPR annually.

  • Attend all sessions.
  • Arrive on time to each and every class session. Due to the condensed format, exceptions cannot be made. A missed session constitutes a failure. Excessive tardiness (more than 20 minutes) constitutes an automatic failure.
