Water Safety Instructor Course

Club Fit is an authorized provider for the American Red Cross.

American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Re-Certification Course:
This course is intended for instructors who need to recertify their WSI, and their certifications have not lapsed for more than one year.

American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certification Course:
The course begins with Fundamentals of Instructor Training (FIT) to teach students the American Red Cross standards of how to become the best instructors they can be.

During the remainder of the course, students will learn how to teach proper stroke technique, as well as how to swim properly themselves. Students must have a strong knowledge of stroke proficiency to sign up for this course.

WSI candidates must be at least 16-years-old and must pass a Pre-Course Skills Test as follows:
  • Front Crawl — 25 yards
  • Back Crawl — 25 yards
  • Breaststroke — 25 yards
  • Elementary Backstroke — 25 yards
  • Sidestroke — 25 yards
  • Butterfly — 25 yards
  • Tread water for one minute
  • Maintain position on back for one minute (sculling or float)
Performance of these skills must be consistent with the American Red Cross “Learn to Swim/Level 4 Stroke Performance” criteria. In order to become a WSI, you must complete pre-course skills, attend all classes, participate and be prepared for teach-back assignments, and you must attain at least an 80% on the final exam. Once you are a WSI, you will be certified to teach:
  • Learn-To-Swim (6 Levels)
  • Parent and Child Aquatics (2 Levels)
  • Pre-School Aquatics (3 Levels)
  • Adult Aquatic Training (3 Levels)
  • Water Safety Outreach, includes:
    • Basic Water Rescue
    • Personal Water Safety
    • Safety Training for Swim Coaches*
    • Water Safety Today
    • Water Safety presentations, which include the following:
    • General Water Safety
    • Home Pool Safety
    • Parent Orientation to Swim Lessons
    • Sun Safety
    • Rip Current Safety
    • Longfellow's W.H.A.L.E. Tales

We offer private swim lessons to help prepare WSI candidates for their Pre-Course Skills Test. There is an additional fee for this.
NOTE:
Refunds are given to those who do not pass the course, minus a $100 participation fee.
