Lifeguard Training

Club Fit is an authorized provider for the American Red Cross.

The purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Course is to provide entry-level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies. Participants also learn how to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel can take over.

Prerequisites:

  • All Lifeguard and Water Safety Instructor offerings are “Blended Learning Courses.” This means that a portion of the course will be taken online through the American Red Cross, prior to the start of the course. Upon completion of Blended Learning, you will be prompted to print your “training completion” record. Please bring this document to the first day of your course.
  • Must be 15 years old on or before final course date, and show proof of age at the Pre-Course Test.
  • Swim 550 yards continuously, demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Participants may swim using the Front Crawl, Breaststroke, or a combination of both. Swimming on back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles are allowed.
  • Tread water for two minutes only using the legs. Participants should place their hands under their armpits.
  • Complete a timed event in 1 minute, 40 seconds.
           • Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are allowed.
           • Surface dive, feet first or head first, into a depth of seven to ten feet and retrieve a ten-pound object.
           • Return to the surface, swim 20 yards to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object and face near the surface.
           • Exit the water, without using a ladder or steps.
  • Swim five yards, submerge and retrieve three dive rings that are placed five yards apart in four to seven feet of water. Resurface and swim another five yards to complete the skill sequence.

Certification Requirements:

  • Attend and participate in all class sessions. There are no make-ups.
  • Demonstrate competency in all required skills and activities.
  • Demonstrate competency in all required final rescue skill scenarios.
  • Pass final written exams with minimum grade of 80%.

Certificates Issued and Validity Period:

  • American Red Cross certificate for Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED is valid for two years.
  • American Red Cross Certificate for Waterfront Skills is valid for two years.
  • Administering Emergency Oxygen is valid for two years.
  • Bloodborne Pathogens Training: Preventing Disease Transmission is valid for one year.

Lifeguard Pre-Course Preparation is available to help prepare Lifeguard candidates for Pre-Course test. There is an additional fee for this instruction.

CPR /AED for the Professional Rescuer:

The purpose of the American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers program is to train professional level rescuers to respond to breathing and cardiac emergencies in adults, children and infants until more advanced medical personnel take over. Participants also learn how to use breathing barriers and an AED.

Taught the second Wednesday of every month from 6:00 - 9:00 pm.

Lifeguard Training - Pre-Course Test Preparation:
Practice before the Lifeguard Training Course with a Lifeguard Instructor. Consists of two one-hour sessions. Call (914) 250-2735 or email the Aquatics Department to set-up your appointment today!

Required skills that will be reviewed:  

  • Swim 500 yards continuously demonstrating front crawl and breaststroke.
  • Tread water for two minutes.
  • Swim 25 yards, retrieve a 10-lb. brick from the bottom of the pool in 9 feet of water and swim 25 yards back to the wall with it.

* There is an additional $35 fee, which course participants pay directly to the American Red Cross. The fee covers the cost of the online training portion of the course. Participants will make the payment once the course commences. The instructor will explain the process in detail on the first night of the course.

** Waterfront Lifeguards learn the skills needed to prevent and respond to emergencies in non-surf, open water areas found in public parks, resorts, summer camps and campgrounds. Participants learn and demonstrate how to perform Waterfront Rescue Skills safely and effectively.

*** Pocket Mask is required for CPR. Student may bring their own, or purchase one for $15.


Note: Minimum of three participants is required for course to run. If less than three participants register for a course, you may choose to join a future class or be refunded in full. Refunds will not be issued to participants who do not pass the course.

Cancellation is required at least 48 hours prior to Pre-Course Test in order to receive a refund, less a $100 cancelation fee.
