Waterfront Lifeguard Training

Club Fit is an authorized provider for the American Red Cross.

The purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course is to provide entry-level lifeguard participants with knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services (EMS) personnel take over.

Items Provided to Participant:
• American Red Cross Lifeguard Manual
• Resuscitation mask
• Whistle and lanyard

Prerequisites:
• Must be 15 years old on or before the final scheduled session and show proof of age at the Pre-Course.
• Swim 550 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles are allowed.
• Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs. Candidates should place their hands under the armpits.
• Complete a timed event in 1 minute, 40 seconds.

  • Starting in water, swim 20 yards. The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are allowed.
  • Surface dive, feet-first or head-first, to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-lb. object.
  • Return to the surface and swim 20 yards to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object and keeping the face at or near the surface.
  • Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.

• Swim 5 yards, submerge and retrieve three dive rings placed 5 yards apart in 4 to 7 feet of water, resurface and continue to swim another 5 yards to complete the skill sequence.

Lifeguard Pre-Course Preparation is available to help prepare Lifeguard canidates for Pre-Course test. There is an additional fee for this instruction.

Certification Requirements:
• Attend and participate in all class sessions. There are no make-ups.
• Demonstrate competency in all required skills and activities.
• Demonstrate competency in all required final rescue skill scenarios.
• Pass final written exams with minimum grades of 80 percent. 

Certificates Issued and Validity Period:
• American Red Cross certificate for Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED: 2 years
• American Red Cross certificate indicating Waterfront Skills: 2 years
• Administering Emergency Oxygen: 2 years
• Bloodborne Pathogens Training: Preventing Disease Transmission: 1 year

Note: Minimum of 3 participants required for course to run. If less than three participants register for a course, you will be informed the week before your Pre-Course date and may choose to join a future course or be refunded in full.

Refunds will not be issued for participants who do not pass the course. Participants who fail the Pre-Course will not be allowed to continue, but will receive a refund, less a $100 participation fee.  

Cancellation is required 48 hours before the Pre-Course in order to receive a refund, less a $100 cancellation fee.

Pre-Course Preparation Lifeguard Training
Practice before the Lifeguard Training Course with a Lifeguard Instructor

Consists of two 1-hour sessions. Required skills that will be reviewed: 
 

  • Swim 500 yards continuously demonstrating front crawl and breaststroke.
  • Must be able to tread water for two minutes.
  • Swim 25 yards, retrieve a 10-lb. brick from the bottom of the pool in 9 feet of water and swim 25 yards back to the wall with it.
  • Must attend all scheduled classes.
