Here is what a member had to say about employee Ryan Allen, Membership Representative in Briarcliff Manor:

“Ryan is a great salesperson and representative of Club Fit. He is patient, courteous, very caring, and went above and beyond for me.

A swimming student had a lot of wonderful things to say to her mother about instructor, Joe Cave, Water Safety Instructor in Briarcliff Manor:

She has been enjoying all that has been offered at Club Fit. We would like to thank her instructor, Joe, who is an excellent teacher. She has learned a lot from him, and her swimming skills have improved dramatically. She thinks Club Fit is extraordinary and she looks forward to every time that she gets to go there.”

Briarcliff Manor Tennis Professional, Miguel Morales, received a thoughtful recommendation from a family he provides lessons to:

“Miguel is an effective teacher. He continuously challenges us with drills and advice in order to improve our level of play. He is quick to modify his teaching strategies whenever necessary to adapt to our learning styles / needs. He is invested in seeing us all improve, and also has done a wonderful job of encouraging us in a positive manner.  He is also a kind, caring person who has a positive attitude and great sportsmanship.  Anyone who works with Miguel will be immediately impressed by his calm, professional nature. He is a true asset to your team.”

Club Fit Instructor and accessories maven Barbara Aronowitz

September 24, 2015 by karen

— written by Club Fit Member and Guest Blogger Lisa Skelton

Club Fit Instructor Barbara Aronowitz is co-owner of In2Style accessories, available in The Shop at Club Fit

Barbara Aronowitz in The Shop at Briarcliff, which carries In2Style accessories.

Many of us know and love Barbara Aronowitz for her heart-pumping Spin classes at Club Fit Briarcliff. But what many members DON’T know is just how long Barbara has been a part of the Club Fit family, and the roles she has played in the Club’s history!

Barbara, who now lives in White Plains, was a member at Club Fit Jefferson Valley when she joined the staff as a Group Exercise instructor in 1988. But it wasn’t about Spin back then. “We taught any and every Group Exercise class, Step… any new program that came along,” she says. In 1997 she moved to the Briarcliff club as Group Exercise Manager, and then became part of the club’s original Human Resources Team when it was established in 2001.

All the while, she continued to teach and eventually became a certified Spin instructor, which is her current role at the club these days, where she teaches four classes. Along the way, Barbara has become close with co-workers and club members alike, including Spin class participant Patti Loomis. Patti, who lives in Briarcliff Manor, has been a Club Fit Briarcliff member for 15 years, and loves it. “I take all of Barbara’s Spin classes, and also enjoy Pilates and Definitions.” The friendship between Patti and Barbara began about three years ago, and has now bloomed into a business partnership.

Patti, a former paralegal, was running a gift and accessories business from home, attending distributor shows at the Javits Center in Manhattan and visiting New York City showrooms and selling through local shops. Barbara started tagging along to these shows and one day, about six months ago, the light bulb went on: “Why don’t we go into business together?” And In2Style was born.

Today, Barbara and Patti are selling their wares at The Shop at Club Fit, where shop manager Lauren is helping move their merchandise along. “We love to get feedback, so we hope that shoppers let Lauren know what items they’d like to see offered,” says Patti. “We’re out all the time looking for the latest, newest trends in accessories.” Barbara and Patti also pride themselves on offering multiple price points. “We have things for everyone’s budget!” Keep that in mind when holiday shopping time comes around!

Interestingly enough, this new venture brings things full circle for Barbara, who has a degree in Fashion Merchandising! She says has loved being with Club Fit for these past 27 years, especially because of the flexibility she has had to grow within the club, as well as outside the club. “I feel like I have a special relationship with Club Fit,” she says. “It’s just a great place!”

To get in touch with Barbara and Patti about their venture, or to offer suggestions on what you’d like to see in The Shop, you can email They’d love to hear from you! Or just tap Barbara on the shoulder after Spin class, she’s always ready to talk shop!

Healthy Aging and Exercising for a Healthier Lifestyle

September 23, 2015 by Liz

For many of us, working work full time, sitting at jobs all day, commuting to work or being busy taking care of children and/or family, leaves little time to take care of ourselves and not enough time to exercise. How can you make fitness part of your life, improve your health, feel better about yourself and help you to lose weight? How do you begin?

Here are some tips to help you get started:

● Before starting a daily exercise program consult with your doctor if you have a current medical condition, disability or have not been exercising and would like to start. Ask if you should take any special precautions when you exercise.

● Start slowly and set realistic goals for yourself. Start gradually with exercising for 15 minutes twice a week, and then add another session. Also, slowly increase your training times by a few minutes each session.

● Plan ahead and make yourself a priority. Set time for yourself on a daily basis as to when you will exercise.

● Reward yourself: Set achievable goals for yourself. Start with small goals and when you achieve them reward yourself.

Guidelines from The American College of Sports Medicine suggest that:

1) Healthy adults under the age of 65 should aim for:
– Moderate intense cardiovascular exercises 30 minutes a day (aerobic exercise), five days a week or vigorous intense exercises 20 minutes a day, 3 days a week and strengthening-exercises twice a week.
– Flexibility or stretching exercises are also recommended a minimum of 2-3 days a week

2) Healthy adults 65 years or older:
– Low-to-Moderate aerobic exercises, 30 minutes a day, 5 times a week and gentle strengthening-exercises (very light weights), 2- 3 times a week

– Flexibility or stretching exercises at a minimum of 2-3 times a week

Types of Aerobic and Low-to-Moderate Exercises:

Screen Shot 2015-09-22 at 2.56.52 PM

If you want to determine your fitness level, refer to the reference guide from The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:

For beginners, you can simply start out by learning the basics of the talk test, which is a rule of thumb for doing moderate-intensity activity and you can still talk, but not sing during an activity. However, if you are doing a vigorous-activity you would want to learn how to find your target heart rate and determine what intensity range you should be exercising at for optimal cardiac performance. Check out the Stay Healthy Website to determine a simple way to find your target heart rate at: Once you find your target heart rate, wearing a heart rate monitor will make it easier to monitor your desired rate.

If you would like to improve your current level of fitness, or have had an injury or illness, but still have questions about how to begin a safe exercise program our experienced and dedicated licensed physical therapist can help you get started. We also offer a free 10 minute screening at IvyRehab Briarcliff (914) 762 – 2222 and IvyRehab Jefferson Valley (914) 245 – 8807 Check Medicare and most insurances accepted.

Here’s to a healthier lifestyle and healthy aging!

National Physical Therapy Month is Celebrating Healthy Aging

September 21, 2015 by Liz

National Physical Therapy Month (NPTM) is hosted by The American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) each October to recognize how Physical Therapists help transform society by restoring and improving motion in people’s lives. This October the focus is on Health Aging.

As movement experts, the goal of the Physical Therapists at IvyRehab Briarcliff and IvyRehab Jefferson Valley, which are now located inside Club Fit, will be offering free 10 minute screenings and advice to its’ club members to overcome pain, gain and maintain movement, and preserve their independence-without the need, in many cases, for surgery or long-term prescription drug use.

If treatment is required individuals now have the opportunity under the Direct Access Law in New York State to be evaluated and treated without a prescription for 10 visits or treatment within 30 days before seeing their physician.

Exercise may be the closest thing we have to the fountain of youth. The right type and amount of it, prescribed by a physical therapist, can help prevent or manage many age-related health conditions.

Stop by the lobby at Club Fit Briarcliff on the following days/times to learn tips on aging well and about Direct Access. You can also sign up for a 10 minute free screening for sports, balance and/or spinal screening by our Licensed Physical

Committing to Big Change.

September 8, 2015 by Kendra

Kendra2croppedI’m making a big commitment to weight loss and setting a huge goal for myself. Over the next two years, I aim to lose 100 pounds.

With a 50 pound weight loss under my belt, I have the confidence and the tools to develop a sustainable plan to lose the rest of my excess body weight, and hopefully for good. This is a huge decision, and an enormous undertaking, but I know that I’m ready.

Setting a goal of losing 100 pounds is not about obsessing over the scale pound by pound, and achieving this specific goal “or else.” Instead, it’s about putting a big stake in the ground to keep my eyes on the horizon of long-term change. With the gratitude that comes from cancer survivorship, I’m ready to do whatever I need to do to minimize health risks in my future.

I’ve carried extra weight all my life. In fact, I have developed a strong sense of identity around being bigger and stronger than average, and in being comfortable and confident taking up space and having a powerful presence. That is a lot of really great work that I have absolutely no intention of undoing. I’m not setting out with the intention of changing the shape of my body to fit into a smaller clothing size. My goals are pinned on good health, longevity, and improving my athletic abilities to have more fun!

To eventually accomplish this Herculean task, here’s what I’m going to do:

  1. Having already gotten the thumbs-up at my annual physical, I’m now going to check in with my doctor periodically, to make sure I’m on the right track.
  2. Do my homework to build a nutrition and exercise plan that I know I can support with the time I have to put in.
  3. Move at a sustainable pace. I’m not going to do anything now that I intend to stop doing when I lose my excess weight. This means, I’m going to exercise several times a week and continue to enjoy the foods I love on occasion, even if it means I move at a less aggressive pace.

Here’s what I’m NOT going to do:

  1. Allow negative self-talk.
  2. Obsess over calories.
  3. Quit.

At this point, I know myself well enough to know that when my mind is right, my body will follow. So, by that logic, if I remain my own number one fan, I can’t lose.

Wish me luck! If any of you have had success with big changes, I’d love to hear about it.
