Barbara Cochran is our Briarcliff Fitness Member of the Month for September 2018

Club Fit Member Barbara Cohen
Barbara Cochran is our Club Fit Briarcliff Fitness Member of the Month for September 2018

Barbara Cochran has been a member since 1993. One thing that she has learned about Club Fit is that it stays the same even as it changes, all while continuing to be a great health club. But the one constant is that everyone knows your name, there is always something new to try, it is clean with up to date equipment and professional staff.

Even on days when I may not want to work out — and it is work — I am greeted at the door, often by name, and the energy of fellow members gets me going.

I have always appreciated the fact that Club Fit offers new workout options and continually updates the programs. The original spin classes were held in a small studio with bikes that had three or four “clicks” to add resistance, while members listened to the instructor and music through their own headphone sets and radio setting. And we had to line up to sign up! Contrast that with the state of the art spin studio and equipment we have today!

But even if a spin class is no longer part of my cardio routine, I have found so many other options that meet my changing work out needs. TRX and Hoist Roc-It classes are quick and effective. There is always a new class or cardio machine to try with a willing staff to assist. Myzone is a great tool and I use it every day. I love the competitions and the motivation it provides me during my workouts.

My husband and I think of Club Fit as the health insurance that helps us maintain an active and healthy lifestyle. We both have bounced back from health challenges much faster because of our regular visits and workouts at Club Fit over the past 25 years.

Thank you Club Fit for your commitment to staying the same while always changing! I am honored to be Member of the Month.

Wizard of Water – Larry Koffer

August 1, 2018 by jeanne

Meet the Wizard of Water

By Jeremy Brown

Larry Koffer has been swimming all his life, but his biggest challenge is yet to come.

For Club Fit swimming instructor Larry Koffer, being in the water is just a way of life. “I love swimming,” he says, “and I’ve been doing it all my life, one way or another.”

Born and raised in the Bronx, Koffer began swimming in the Bronx River and was a competitive swimmer in high school and college. “I wasn’t the fastest guy on the team,” he said. “I remember when we’d swim, my coach would use a sundial to time me!” Koffer, however, is just being modest. In fact, he was the Bronx Park Department 100-meter swim champion in 1964.

From swimming in the river to swimming in the pool, Koffer knew that he had found a second home in the water. From then on, he was always trying to find a way to get wet, diving in whenever and wherever he could. When he sold his construction business, the opportunity suddenly presented itself to make swimming a full-time pursuit. “Looking at retirement, I thought, what am I going to do?’” he said. “So I became a Red Cross instructor.”

Koffer’s Red Cross training eventually paved the way for him to become a swimming instructor at Club Fit. At the club, he says that he gets a particular thrill from passing on his love of swimming to people.

“I love teaching people how to swim,” he says. “It’s magical to me. Swimming is an out-of-this-world experience. It’s the perfect exercise and it’s very meditative.”

He says that he really enjoys being able to work with people who aren’t used to being in or around the water and seeing that “moment” when it all clicks for them. “I teach a lot of adults,” he says, “and they haven’t learned how to swim, and they’ve got some anxiety about it. And to get them loosened up and approach swimming as fun, when they get it, it’s like bells go off. Suddenly it all fits.”

Koffer’s enthusiasm and passion for swimming has earned him the nickname “The Wizard of Water.” Although, in the interest of full disclosure, he admits that he is responsible for the moniker.

“On some memo, I signed off as ‘the Wizard of Water,’ and it stuck!” he says, laughing.

After a lifetime of swimming, Koffer is about to undertake his most exciting challenge on the water, a one-mile swim across the Hudson River, from Newburgh to Beacon, on July 28. The swim is a charity event to raise money for the care and maintenance of the River Pool in Beacon. Even more than the challenge of swimming across the Hudson, Koffer is excited about the feeling of unity that comes when a group of swimmers all get together. “I love being on the beach with hundreds of water babies, swimmers who are all loving the water, some are skilled, some are Olympians or near Olympians, national champions,” he said. “But they’re all loving the water, and it’s just like this camaraderie. Some want to swim for a record, some just want to be in the water.”

After crossing the Hudson, Koffer might try for a two-mile swim, he said. But, whatever comes next, he is just grateful for every day in the water. “When I was in junior high school, my best friend’s family had a house on Lake Mahopac, so I came up here 50 years ago,” he said. “And now, to be back here as an adult, living here, swimming in the lake, having wonderful friends…this is perfect.”

Patrick wrote us to thank Tiana for the great results she helped him achieve during the 40-day Training Challenge: “After rehabbing my injured knee for the past 10 months this program provided me with a great bridge bringing me back to fitness. During the 40 days I achieved all of my goals including improved strength and conditioning. Through the increased activity and Tiana’s nutritional counseling, I also achieved a substantial weight loss. Tiana is an excellent coach that has a tremendous understanding of fitness and movement patterns. She was able to modify each exercise to make it both safe and effective for me. Thank you for everything, Patrick”

The goals of the Training Challenge include losing weight, improving stamina and strength, and becoming the strongest version of yourself.  Keep an eye out for future challenges!

Fitness Success Story: Janet Murff

Healthier and happier — Club Fit Member Janet Murff started training with Personal Trainer Candice O’Brien in 2015 and is now stronger, fitter, and happier.

Club Fit Member Janet Murff and Personal Trainer Candice O’Brien — working together to help Janet reach her goals.

“I’d like to express my appreciation to my trainer Candice and Club Fit. I am thrilled! The physical & mental benefits of exercise are amazing.

When I made my decision in November 2015 to have a personal trainer, I was out of shape and feeling stressed from two years of the life changing activities of caring for one’s parents; too much driving, too much sitting. Realizing what a difference a trainer would mean to my success, I signed up — and as luck would have it, I was paired with the right trainer from day one. I began with the goals of improved health and fitness. I knew that I could only commit to two or three gym visits per week. Consistency would make it work. Weight loss was far down my list. Today, I am much stronger, fitter, more toned, and happier than I was a year ago. Weight loss has been a bonus. I know that I could not have done this alone. I am excited to set new goals for 2017 and look forward to continue working with Candice to help me reach these.” – Club Fit Member Janet Murff

Congratulations to Janet on her hard work and her commitment to health!

Fitness Success Story: Kathi Grossman

Kathi Grossman joined Club Fit in October of 2013 at the recommendation of her doctors. Read how Club Fit has helped to impact her life and help her reach her fitness goals.

Kathi before, and how she looks today. Amazing progress on her fitness journey!

I have been morbidly obese all my life. I ended up with Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, arthritis, and no cartilage in one of my knees. I was injecting insulin up to four times a day and taking numerous medications. I finally had enough! I had WLS (weight loss surgery) on September 22, 2011, and lost 210 pounds, which changed my life more than I ever could have imagined. Within hours of the WLS I was off all medications. I am still medication free, except for supplements. Having been obese all my life, as the weight came off, other issues arose. No core, no muscle tone, loose skin EVERYWHERE!! My doctor gave me a prescription to join Club Fit on the HelpRx program, which was the best thing that could have happened to me. Personal Trainer Russ was my first encounter with a trainer. I was pretty intimidated, but Russ took his time, listened to me and my physical limitations, and designed a routine just for me. This was the beginning — I started taking classes, and I mean everything, even things I thought I couldn’t do just to challenge myself. I started with Retro-Low, Low-impact Zumba, Kickboxing, Definitions, 4×4, Corebar, Spin, and Yoga. If they had a class I was there. I started to see where I fit and what I liked to do. This could have been overwhelming as exercise was NEVER a part of my life. Now I love to spin and weight train and do a few machines. The instructors were excellent and most helpful. There are so many wonderful people who have escorted me on my journey. There is, however, one person who stands out and that is General Manager Mark Cuatt. He took me under his wing and gave me a crash course in nutrition and then an exercise regimen for me to follow. He didn’t have to do that; he has enormous responsibilities running the club on a day-to-day basis. Nonetheless, we would meet at the gym, I would email him my food menus and things started to change again! This has not been an easy journey. I had a few setbacks but, to date, I have lost 250 pounds!! As I type the number it seems surreal.

I take advantage of most of the things Club Fit offers. I have a MYZONE belt, I use it always and should I forget it, I am lost. I do the FIT-3D scans, which help you see the transformation you are attaining. This experience would not have been as successful without the help of so many of the personal trainers, instructors and coaches. I wish I could name all of you, as you are all very special to me, because at one time you made it a point to help me with your time, advice or even a friendly “Hello!”. ALL of you have made an impact in changing NOT only my outward appearance but teaching me that being healthy is an everyday choice. Mark Cuatt told me once, I am always going to wage this battle in my head with my weight. Some days I’ll win and some days I’ll lose; but “never give up” is the moral of this story.

So I thank Club Fit for helping me find ME—the me I was meant to be. You have helped to give a healthy me back to my husband, children and granddaughter. Hopefully I will be around a long time still working out, and if I can inspire ONE person through my story, then I have made a difference!

Fitness Success Story: Grace Qiu

Personal Trainer Dan Lo Cascio helped Club Fit member Grace Qiu achieve the weight loss she wanted, and more!

“My name is Grace, I came to America in August of 2015. Because of the rich food here I gained nearly 20 pounds in four months. I struggled with the food every minute when I went to supermarket and dining out. The struggle with food took up a lot of my energy and I became depressed so I decided to go to the gym to lose weight and reshape my body. I met with Personal Trainer Dan Lo Cascio and told him my goals were: 1. lose 15 pounds, 2. reduce the fat around my waist, especially abdominal fat, and 3. build lean muscle, look fit and slim! Dan created the plan according to my goals and divided the whole workouts as piece by piece. I never felt bored and I was always challenged! We had a lot of fun every day and I looked forward to the training the next day! I was excited to come to Club Fit each day! Finally we achieved every goal! I didn’t believe we could achieve the goals because we only had one month. My weight went from 53.6kg to 46kg. I lost 17 pounds; two pounds over my goal! Dan did it! I followed his plan step by step. He is amazing; everyone said my body is fitter when I went back China! I am so luckily to meet Dan! Thank you very much Dan! I really recommend Dan. He made a boring hard workout become an enjoyable workout! And most important thing is it really works and helped me a lot… allowing me to build my confidence and get active again!!!!”

Congratulations to Grace on her hard work
and her commitment to health!

Fitness Success Story: Deborah & Joe Dwyer

Master Trainer Leslie Kesselman helped Club Fit member Deborah Dwyer and her son Joe achieve results.

Leslie transformed my life and has given me the confidence, ability, and knowledge to resume exercising after being afraid due to my hip replacements and dislocations at such a young age. I have been to multiple trainers in the past, and none of them compares to Leslie: she really understands how the body works and is able to individualize to her client’s needs; For example, her exercises have strengthened the muscles around my hips to prevent dislocation, strengthened my core, and improved my balance. I was ready to give up exercising altogether until I met Leslie! I do not fear of dislocating anymore, and even my surgeon agrees my hips and gait are much stronger. While in graduate school, my son put on excess weight, but has spent the last nine months committed to Leslie’s routine and has lost the weight. Leslie made him feel comfortable and confident that he could do it, and he now looks like a different person. Leslie knew exactly what to do to help Joe. Not only does he look great on the outside, but he more importantly improved his inner physiological health. Leslie is the best! We both recommend her with the highest regard. Sincerely yours, Deborah Dwyer”

We love hearing from happy members who have achieved their goals and gotten results. Congratulations to Deborah & Joe on their hard work and their commitment to health!

Fitness Success Story: Mary Healy

Mary Healy joined Club Fit in February 2015 and began personal training with Master Trainer Beth Kear in March. Here is what she has to say about her fitness journey with Club Fit:

Most of my life I have been overweight. After much time and effort, at this point in my fitness journey, I have lost over 65lbs and I am now off Hypertension medications. My main interest in joining Club Fit was to use the pool for exercise post back surgery. Once I felt stronger I wanted to learn how to use the Fitness Center but was anxious regarding safety. Soon after, a club manager suggested working with a personal trainer to ease my way into a new fitness regime and help with my balance and strength weaknesses. Master Trainer Beth Kear stepped into my life and everything changed. She has shared her knowledge as tools to use everyday until they become part of you. My strength, balance, and endurance has all increased, but most of all — my confidence. This is my first experience joining a health club, it has been one of my best decisions I have made. It is true you never stop learning!

We are so happy for your success Mary, congratulations in your progress and your accomplishments!

Rosemary’s Fitness Success Story

December 10, 2015 by Liz

Rosemary-Burgos-Bennett-w
My name is Rose Burgos-Bennett, and I have been struggling with weight loss for most of my life. I am the type of person that loses interest quickly, and I have explored many different ways to lose weight. I have even taking my plans to the extreme. After I had my son, I was at my heaviest — 280 lbs! I tried various home programs to lose weight; the P.I.N.K method, Shaun T’s Insanity and T-25. From these programs, I lost approximately 45 to 50 lbs. I also tried Crossfit and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, but due to a shoulder injury and then a neck injury, I had to stop. I was in physical therapy for almost 2 1/2 years, but my weight remained at 230 lbs. I needed to get into Physical Therapy, and this is when Club Fit came into my life. Once recovered, I wanted to try to get fit and healthy and continue my weight loss journey.

My husband and I decided to join the Summer Shape Up program with personal trainers Tiana Gonzalez and Nick Paganelli. Both my husband and I had completely different goals. Steven’s goal was to gain muscle mass and mine was to lose weight. I was hesitant at first to begin personal training but Tiana has been a class act! She has been extremely helpful, and worked with my abilities and pushed me to do more. She has been an incredible coach and cheerleader and has celebrated my success every step of the way. She was also attentive to form and intensity to ensure I never injured myself during the workouts. During the 8-week program I lost 17lbs! MYZONE has been an essential tool in the process. Tiana used it to monitor me during training and paced me accordingly. I love that it tells me how many calories burned during an activity and that it shows how much I am pushing myself during my workouts. I am always trying to get to the red…LOL. It has been excellent — and I love it.

My husband and I use our MYZONE belts even when we are not in the Club. We monitor each other when jogging/walking on the outside track. We go out there as a family and we try to engage both our kids in all we do. I know I am not at my goal weight yet, but I am going in the right direction. I am taking it a day at a time and celebrating my successes in my continual journey to lose weight.

Fitness Success Story: Joe Giorgio

Joe with Personal Trainer Russ Schum
Joe with Personal Trainer Russ Schum

Joe Giorgio (pictured with Personal Trainer Russ Schum) joined Club Fit in December. He had some health issues, submitted a physician’s recommendation form and met with Ted Gilsinger our Fitness Director to review his program.

Joe is thoroughly impressed with the club and has nothing but great praise for our reception and fitness teams. Reception greets him warmly each morning, and everyone refers to him as Uncle Joe!

Fitness has been on their “A” game since the first day he met with a fit coach and was set up with a basic routine on the Circuit and given specific guidelines for treadmill activity. He raves about our fitness staff as being knowledgeable, receptive and extremely attentive each time he is in the fitness center.

He truly looks forward to his visits on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings and is proud to give us updates on his progress and “graduation” to new levels and equipment. His new goal is to get to 400 on the Keiser leg press after starting at 130 on his first day (he’s increased his strength threefold!) He never expected to stick with the club and certainly never expected to enjoy his time at the club.

To be set up on the Circuit or meet one of our Fit Coaches, all you have to do is come into the building! We are on call at the Service Desk 5:00 am–11:00 pm Monday – Friday and 6:30–9:00 pm Saturday & Sunday, and we strive to perpetuate the same welcoming environment each and every day!
