Another successful Think Fit for Kids at Club Fit

Great news — we are happy to announce we hosted yet another successful Think Fit For Kids event at Club Fit Briarcliff!

The goal of this annual event is to raise to benefit pediatric brain tumor research via Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation. The foundation is the world’s leading nonprofit dedicated to the childhood brain tumor community. They serve the more than 28,000 U.S. children and teens battling brain tumors by investing in the most promising research and providing practical, informational and emotional support to families.

Event organizer Kim Gilman was happy to report this year’s event, held on March 9, 2019, had an impressive turnout. “Thank you, once again, to Club Fit for donating their amazing venue and staff for the 9th annual Think Fit For Kids! This year alone, we have already raised over $225,000 to fund the most promising pediatric brain cancer research. When we first approached Club Fit back in 2011, I don’t think any of us thought we could ever come close to raising $2 million in nine years! But, we have! And in the process, we have built awareness around this horrific disease and built a community of support and hope for families battling pediatric brain cancer. Thank you, Club Fit for your generous partnership. Together, we WILL find gentler and more promising treatments and a cure for kids’ brain cancer!”

Shout out to our caring and enthusiastic Energy Center Staff, and Manager Melissa Lawrence, who says, “I am very happy to be a part of this event. We have been doing it for nine years and it’s for a great cause. My staff never hesitate to help and they have a great time engaging with the kids at the event.”

Jason has been with the Dryland program for several sessions now. He is one of the athlete’s chosen to demonstrate skills for proper form and performance. Jason excels at running and all speed & agility drills. His balance on the functional equipment is above par. Able to balance in many positions on physio balls, he is swift-footed and full of energy. How Does Daylight Saving Time Affect Us?

Daylight Saving Time is seen by many as one of the first signs of spring in the Northern Hemisphere. After the cold dark days of winter, who doesn’t love an extra hour of daylight to enjoy after work? While we may be happy about the extra light in our evening, there are also potential issues to watch for. Disruption of the circadian rhythm can have negative effects. The beginning of DST can cause symptoms of jet lag. It can take several days for your body clock to adjust to the change.

Take advantage of the evening daylight to get outside and get moving!

To help lessen the impact of a sudden change, NBC News suggests “To reduce the effects of DST, try to reset your clock by going to bed and waking up 15-20 minutes earlier starting a few days before the time change.”

Experts recommend being extra mindful during the first week or so, as there is increased potential for accidents caused by sluggishness.

Want to speed up your body’s adjustment to the change? Exercise! “A 1987 study found that hamsters that ran on an exercise wheel adjusted to a new lab-created time zone in a day and a half, on average, while those that did no exercise took more than eight days to adjust.” Take advantage of the extra daylight to get outside or into the club and after work — hibernation season is over!

According to Forbes, massage is another great tool to help alleviate fatigue. Club Fit offers a range of spa services on-site at both locations as a complement to your overall health and wellness program.

Heath — who grew up in Wichita Falls, Texas — was taught to play tennis when he was eight years old by his father, a former college player and local junior high school coach.

Heath became a certified teaching pro with the USPTA (U.S. Professional Tennis Association) in 1997 in Ft. Worth, Texas. He moved to the Northeast in 1999 and has been an active member of the USPTA for 22 years. In 2009, he won the Cardio Tennis Fast Feed contest for the Eastern Division. He then went on to take second place in the National Cardio Tennis Fast Feed contest at the USPTA National Conference in Marco Island, Florida. Heath continues to attend multiple Eastern conferences every year. This year, the Eastern USPTA Board of Directors voted him in as Southern District President after current Eastern President, Geoff Jagdfeld, nominated him for the position.

There are six district presidents within the Eastern Division: Manhattan, New Jersey, Western, Northern, Long Island, & Southern. The Southern District is made up of Westchester & Rockland Counties. Each district’s president serves as a liaison between the district’s members and the Board of Directors. The district president is responsible for forming a committee within the district and to work with them to create and offer multiple events for the USPTA members of their district as well as neighboring districts — three educational events, two social events, and one charity event per calendar year. The district presidents also carry out various administrative duties as required to support their respective districts.

Heath is also hoping to use his new position to bring some additional tennis events to Club Fit Briarcliff. For more info on USPTA, you can find it at uspta.com.

Greetings!

My name is Leslie Kesselman. I am a master trainer and a group exercise instructor at Club Fit. I have been in the business of exercise; educating and working with individuals for 35 years. I have been at Club Fit for 21 years. I have learned, grown and received much gratification along the way.

When we moved up to Westchester I decided to join a gym, mostly to meet people. I started going to group fitness classes and really enjoyed them. I found that exercising made me feel good. It felt healthy to be moving. I felt better than I did in years. I became a fitness instructor that year. I was fit, healthy and happy.

During my tenure as a group fitness instructor and master trainer I have worked with many different populations. Today the focus of my work is with the active aging population. The aging process presents many changes physiologically. We lose muscle mass, our joints become arthritic and stiff, our bones lose density, our neuromuscular system slows down, our balance and ability to react are compromised. There are postural changes. Maybe you’ve had a joint replacement? These issues can be addressed and improved with different forms of exercise such as; strength training to build bone density and muscular strength, balance exercises to prevent falling, proper alignment and core work exercises to help keep you injury free and flexibility exercises to increase range of motion around a joint to ease symptoms of discomfort.

Aging is a slow but inevitable process. You have the ability to delay that process and be as active and healthy as possible. Let me help you achieve that. I will design an individualized exercise program for you that takes into account your interests and goals as well as your limitations and health risks.

Exercising is worth the time and the effort. It makes you healthier. It makes you feel better. You can continue to do more of the activities that you enjoy. You can live your life to the fullest!

New Equipment coming to Briarcliff Fitness!

Some of the new fitness equipment coming to Club Fit Briarcliff this summer!

There’s lots going on in our Briarcliff Fitness department! As you know, Donna Berta is now our Fitness Manager. Just recently, Personal Trainer Russ Schum was promoted to Personal Training Manager. And now, we’re getting some new toys! New machines include Stages Solo bikes, Matrix Olympic benches, and a new circuit in the Women’s area including Matrix leg press, glute press, and chest press.

We’ll be doing some rearranging in the coming weeks to accommodate the new equipment and improve the flow of our Fitness area in general.

Prevention Tips for Tennis Injuries

Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) typically affects middle aged (40 to 60 years of age) adults and only 1 in 20 play tennis. If you have pain and/tenderness on the inside of your elbow, that is not going away it could be caused by different reasons such as improper techniques, poor physical conditioning, weight of the tennis racquet, too much tension on the strings of the racquet, balls are too heavy, type of court surface you are playing on and the grip size of the racquet. Other causes for lateral epicondylitis come from repeated forcible extension of the wrist such as using a screwdriver, heavy lifting and shoveling snow. Overuse of the muscles that extend the wrist usually has no pain at rest, but will increase with activity.

Treatment of tennis elbow focuses on relieving pain, controlling inflammation, promoting healing, improving local and general fitness and controlling force loads and repetitive movements with the wrists. Physical therapy uses a variety of modalities to relieve pain and decrease inflammation, massage and soft tissue mobilization techniques to heal the tissues. In addition, the following stretching and exercises are also recommended:

NOTE: the recommended stretching and exercises should not cause any increase pain. In the event that they do, you should stop immediately and consult with your physician.

Stretching Tips

● Forearm stretch:
Hold arm straight out, fingers pointed towards the floor. Use your opposite hand and pull the fingers towards the body until a stretch is felt. Hold 10 seconds, repeat 3 times.
Repeat same as above, but fingers are pointed towards the ceiling. Use the opposite hand to fingers towards you. Hold 10 seconds, repeat 3 times.

● Racquet stretch:
Stand with your feet shoulder width apart. Hold your racquet at the top of its frame with the right hand behind your head. Grasp the grip of the racquet with the left hand and slowly pull the racquet down the back. Hold 15 – 20 seconds. Repeat 3 times. Switch hands and do in the opposite direction

● Scapular Stretch:
Cross the right arm in front of the left shoulder letting the elbow bend so that the hand droops over the left shoulder. With the left hand on the right elbow, push your arm in towards the back of the room. Hold for 15 – 20 seconds. Repeat 3 times.

● Arm overhead stretch:
Take your left hand over your head. Bend it at the elbow, so that your left hand is over your head near your right ear. Then take the right hand and push the left elbow with it more toward the right. Hold for 15 – 20 seconds. Repeat 3 times

● Hands behind the back stretch:
Grasp your hands behind your back while holding them at the wrist. Pull your left hand more towards the right and then do in the opposite direction. Hold 10 – 15 seconds. Repeat 2 -3 times

Recommended Strengthening Exercises

● Ball Gripping: Use a soft ball and repetitively squeeze to strengthen the forearm muscles. Do 100 – 200 times a day.

● Wrist curls: Support your forearm on a table and stabilize your wrist with your other hand. Hold a 1 – 2 pound weight and bring your wrist up toward the ceiling and then back down. Now turn your palm up and once again bend your wrist toward the ceiling. Do 10 times/ 3 sets. Increase in 1/2 pound increments.

● Broom – Handle Exercise: Take a stick and hang a 1 – 2 pound weight from a string to the stick. Keep the arms held out in front, with the palms down and attempt to roll the weight up and then back down. Repeat with palms up. Do 10 times/3 sets.

Many of us know and love Barbara Aronowitz for her heart-pumping Spin classes at Club Fit Briarcliff. But what many members DON’T know is just how long Barbara has been a part of the Club Fit family, and the roles she has played in the Club’s history!

Barbara, who now lives in White Plains, was a member at Club Fit Jefferson Valley when she joined the staff as a Group Exercise instructor in 1988. But it wasn’t about Spin back then. “We taught any and every Group Exercise class, Step… any new program that came along,” she says. In 1997 she moved to the Briarcliff club as Group Exercise Manager, and then became part of the club’s original Human Resources Team when it was established in 2001.

All the while, she continued to teach and eventually became a certified Spin instructor, which is her current role at the club these days, where she teaches four classes. Along the way, Barbara has become close with co-workers and club members alike, including Spin class participant Patti Loomis. Patti, who lives in Briarcliff Manor, has been a Club Fit Briarcliff member for 15 years, and loves it. “I take all of Barbara’s Spin classes, and also enjoy Pilates and Definitions.” The friendship between Patti and Barbara began about three years ago, and has now bloomed into a business partnership.

Patti, a former paralegal, was running a gift and accessories business from home, attending distributor shows at the Javits Center in Manhattan and visiting New York City showrooms and selling through local shops. Barbara started tagging along to these shows and one day, about six months ago, the light bulb went on: “Why don’t we go into business together?” And In2Style was born.

Today, Barbara and Patti are selling their wares at The Shop at Club Fit, where shop manager Lauren is helping move their merchandise along. “We love to get feedback, so we hope that shoppers let Lauren know what items they’d like to see offered,” says Patti. “We’re out all the time looking for the latest, newest trends in accessories.” Barbara and Patti also pride themselves on offering multiple price points. “We have things for everyone’s budget!” Keep that in mind when holiday shopping time comes around!

Interestingly enough, this new venture brings things full circle for Barbara, who has a degree in Fashion Merchandising! She says has loved being with Club Fit for these past 27 years, especially because of the flexibility she has had to grow within the club, as well as outside the club. “I feel like I have a special relationship with Club Fit,” she says. “It’s just a great place!”

TRX: The Benefits of Band Suspension Training

What does TRX really stand for? Many members and clients constantly ask when in awe of those yellow and black dangling straps in our functional area where our TRX classes are held regularly each day. It stands for Total body Resistance Exercises. It is a type of training that uses your own body weight and forces of gravity to build strength, balance, coordination, flexibility, core/joint stability. Plus it’s an excellent tool for corrective exercises and to ultimately prevent injuries.

TRX was originated by the US Navy Seals as a way to stay fit while on missions in remote areas. No matter what your fitness level, TRX is a perfect and versatile way for all. Several fitness types like: athletes, post rehab patients, stay-at-home moms, body builders, the young and the old are all reaping the benefits of TRX!

Whether you’re chasing after the kids or family dog or playing sports or cleaning the house, you are using your “core”. You are mostly in multiple planes. Simply, TRX is a total body work out!

For Starters, you can minimize your training time by working your entire body; at all times you’re keeping your “core” engaged. Also transitioning from one exercise to the next by making simple adjustments can be so easy and you can regress or progress the same exercise to fit the type of client you are working with. You can control the intensity of your work out by walking yourself closer or further away from the anchoring point. So instead of adjusting a seat position or having to grab a different set of dumbbells you simply adjust your foot placement. The direct benefit of transitioning through various exercises can help keep your heart rate up. You can even do great stretches, like stretching more than one body part at a time. TRX is also light weight and easily portable. Workouts could be done virtually anywhere: inside a gym, hotel room or in the great outdoors. To have an affordable, light weight, durable and easily portable band suspension system like the TRX, you can add a new dimension to your work out.
