Alex will be giving a free-to-member presentation in our Conference Room on Tuesday, December 18th at 5:00 pm and Thursday, December 20th at 10:30 am

Subject: The Benefits of Boxing for Mind, Body, & Overall Wellness

Club Fit Personal Trainer Alex Celcis

Hello, I’m Alex Celcis — (NASM) Certified Personal Trainer, Self-Defense Instructor, Kick-Boxing instructor, Karate (Goju Ryu) Instructor. I have over 15 years of martial arts experience and five years’ experience years as a personal trainer.
My passion for boxing and the martial arts grew as a teenager, through watching movies and seeing ordinary humans do extraordinary acts. I then began to go to tournaments, and observe my passion in real-time. I began studying and training diligently as a young adult at the age of 19 and since then I have not ceased the journey of learning, growing and teaching the martial arts to others who want to become stronger, more confident, and healthier physically, mentally and spiritually. And as a result at the age of 36 I feel healthier and stronger then when I was 24.

Top Benefits of Boxing:
• Enhanced cardiovascular health — you need to do cardio to protect yourself from heart disease, burn calories, and lose or maintain your weight
• Improved total-body strength
• Better hand-eye coordination
• Decreased stress
• Improved body composition.

Subject: Why You Should Make Friends with the Indoor Rowing Machine

Club Fit Personal Trainer Candice O'Brien

Hi, I’m Candice O’Brien — Certified Personal Trainer, Spin Instructor, and Fit Coach at Club Fit Briarcliff.  I have over 20 years in the fitness industry.
My passion for running, and ONLY running for many years, led me to several injuries, due to overtraining and the fact that I NEVER stretched or cross-trained. As a single, working mother, there was no time for that stuff!!  While injured and not able to run, I joined a gym to do some strength training (recommended by a physical therapist).  It was at that time I decided to hop on a rowing machine as a warm up before moving on to weights. After five minutes, it became evident that there is more to this machine than meets the eye… it turned out to be my best friend!

Some of the benefits of rowing include:
• Increased strength and cardiovascular endurance
• Improved posture and core strength
• Low impact; ideal for all ages and fitness levels
• Burns tons of calories

Leslie will be giving a free-to-member presentation in our Conference Room on Thursday, October 18th at 7:00 pm and Friday, October 19th at 10:00 am

Subject: Become a Stronger Runner — Build Strength, Stay Healthy and Run Faster

Club Fit Personal Trainer Leslie Schneider
Club Fit Personal Trainer Leslie Schneider

My name is Leslie Schneider. I am a Fit Coach and Personal Trainer here at Club Fit Briarcliff. I decided to offer a workshop on Strength Training for Runners since so many runners I encounter have suffered running related injuries including myself. Whether it is Achilles tendonitis, shin splints, or runner’s knee, all of these conditions can be practically eliminated with a regular strength training program designed with runners in mind.

I took up running myself in the early 1990s. I loved the ease of just putting on a pair of sneakers and taking off. It was made all the more fun by participating in 5ks, 10ks, half-marathons, and more. The high from a good run is the ultimate reward. And I don’t want to give it up.

Over the years I’ve dealt with various overuse injuries that came about due to weak or unbalanced muscles. I’ve learned that by incorporating specific strength training and agility exercises at least 2X a week you can continue running virtually injury free for years to come.

Subject: Active Aging

Club Fit Master Trainer Leslie Kesselman
Club Fit Master Trainer Leslie Kesselman

Greetings!

My name is Leslie Kesselman. I am a master trainer and a group exercise instructor at Club Fit. I have been in the business of exercise; educating and working with individuals for 35 years. I have been at Club Fit for 21 years. I have learned, grown and received much gratification along the way.

When we moved up to Westchester I decided to join a gym, mostly to meet people. I started going to group fitness classes and really enjoyed them. I found that exercising made me feel good. It felt healthy to be moving. I felt better than I did in years. I became a fitness instructor that year. I was fit, healthy and happy.

During my tenure as a group fitness instructor and master trainer I have worked with many different populations. Today the focus of my work is with the active aging population. The aging process presents many changes physiologically. We lose muscle mass, our joints become arthritic and stiff, our bones lose density, our neuromuscular system slows down, our balance and ability to react are compromised. There are postural changes. Maybe you’ve had a joint replacement? These issues can be addressed and improved with different forms of exercise such as; strength training to build bone density and muscular strength, balance exercises to prevent falling, proper alignment and core work exercises to help keep you injury free and flexibility exercises to increase range of motion around a joint to ease symptoms of discomfort.

Aging is a slow but inevitable process. You have the ability to delay that process and be as active and healthy as possible. Let me help you achieve that. I will design an individualized exercise program for you that takes into account your interests and goals as well as your limitations and health risks.

Exercising is worth the time and the effort. It makes you healthier. It makes you feel better. You can continue to do more of the activities that you enjoy. You can live your life to the fullest!

September Fitness Member of the Month

Barbara Cochran is our Briarcliff Fitness Member of the Month for September 2018

Club Fit Member Barbara Cohen
Barbara Cochran is our Club Fit Briarcliff Fitness Member of the Month for September 2018

Barbara Cochran has been a member since 1993. One thing that she has learned about Club Fit is that it stays the same even as it changes, all while continuing to be a great health club. But the one constant is that everyone knows your name, there is always something new to try, it is clean with up to date equipment and professional staff.

Even on days when I may not want to work out — and it is work — I am greeted at the door, often by name, and the energy of fellow members gets me going.

I have always appreciated the fact that Club Fit offers new workout options and continually updates the programs. The original spin classes were held in a small studio with bikes that had three or four “clicks” to add resistance, while members listened to the instructor and music through their own headphone sets and radio setting. And we had to line up to sign up! Contrast that with the state of the art spin studio and equipment we have today!

But even if a spin class is no longer part of my cardio routine, I have found so many other options that meet my changing work out needs. TRX and Hoist Roc-It classes are quick and effective. There is always a new class or cardio machine to try with a willing staff to assist. Myzone is a great tool and I use it every day. I love the competitions and the motivation it provides me during my workouts.

My husband and I think of Club Fit as the health insurance that helps us maintain an active and healthy lifestyle. We both have bounced back from health challenges much faster because of our regular visits and workouts at Club Fit over the past 25 years.

Thank you Club Fit for your commitment to staying the same while always changing! I am honored to be Member of the Month.

Briarcliff Fitness is Getting a Makeover!

August 10, 2018 by karen

Dear Members,

Our Fitness Center is getting a makeover! New Machines…New Turf…New Layout.

We began moving equipment yesterday in preparation for the big move on Sunday, August 12th.

• All cardio equipment from our small fitness room will be moved to the large fitness area.

• The plate-loaded strength equipment which is currently parallel to the turf will be moved to the area outside the fitness office.

• The strength equipment line (incorporating the Fitlinxx training system) running along the perimeter of the smaller fitness area will not be available for a short period of time as we work in this area.

• The small fitness room will be closed to paint and install turf.

Additionally we will not have TV access on some of the equipment until the afternoon of Tuesday, August 14th.

Need help finding a machine or alternate exercise? Please ask a Fitness Coach for assistance.

Thank you for the suggestions and ideas we used to plan these changes!

Sam will be giving a free-to-member presentation in our Conference Room on Monday, August 6th at 10:30 am and Tuesday, August 14th 7:00 am

Subject: Optimizing Your Workout using HIIT & Weight Training

Club Fit Personal Trainer Samantha Franks

I’m Samantha Franks — Personal Trainer and Group Fitness Instructor at Club Fit. Exercise has always been part of my daily life. I grew up playing soccer and lacrosse and continued to play various club sports throughout college — rugby being one of them. In the last few months I’ve completed two Spartan Sprints and my goal is to get the trifecta within the next year.

Training for the Spartan races made me realize that I not only needed cardiovascular endurance but also a great deal of strength, mobility and ability to move my own body weight. I incorporate HIIT into my workouts in combination with weight training. I find that combining the two has helped me improve my overall strength, endurance and even decreased my body fat percentage. I wanted to be physically strong but also athletic and agile and I feel as though I have achieved that.

The benefits of HIIT include lowering your risk of Type 2 diabetes, decreasing abdominal fat, improving cholesterol and decreasing resting blood pressure. HIIT gives you the most health benefits in the shortest amount of time. My style of training incorporates HIIT with barbells, kettle bells and dumbbells. This type of training may be perceived as “only for young and in shape population.” This is in fact false. Research has shown that HIIT is beneficial to people of all ages, including those who currently have Type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol and even high blood pressure. What I like about HIIT is that you don’t need to be in the gym for hours.

HIIT can be done in a fraction of the time while still receiving more benefits then just steady state exercise. In addition to HIIT, weight training is ideal for increasing strength and also promoting bone development which is crucial for an aging population. The stronger your muscles, the stronger your bones will be and this reduces the risk of osteopenia and osteoporosis. I truly believe that you need to put in the time and commitment. Exercise is more then just a few hours of your week; it’s a lifestyle and something to constantly work towards. Exercise doesn’t need to be boring or tedious. Enjoy what you do and have fun with it!

Club Fit Member Spotlight: Max de Janosi

June 28, 2018 by Matt

Finding Your Strength

By Jeremy Brown

After training for a stellar season, Greeley football standout gives back to Club Fit

Although already a standout defensive end at Greeley High School, Max de Janosi, or “DJ,” knew that he needed something more. He found it thanks to Club Fit Personal Training Manager Russ Schum. Schum, who also works as an Assistant Varsity Coach at Greeley, saw potential in DJ, as well as other athletes on the team, and proposed a series of workouts designed to get them in peak condition for the coming season. “He came in three days a week and he’d grind for an hour and a half each day,” Schum said of DJ. “And from there we were able to make a bigger connection than just football, and I think that kind of went a long way towards helping him understand what he needed to do to have the success that he wanted. And once he understood the things he needed to do, there was never a doubt he’d be successful the following year.”

For Max, the sessions were a challenge at first. “There were days when it was tough,” he admitted. “Like Fridays getting home from school and then knowing I’d have to go to the gym. I had to push through that. But I always reminded myself why I was doing it.”

Schum saw that Max was facing some struggles at the outset, but didn’t let up on him, knowing that he would eventually reach his potential. He recalled a story that illustrated Max’s journey from neophyte lifter to next-level athlete. “There’s a thing called a hex bar, it’s a version of a deadlift,” he said. “And DJ wasn’t even one of the top five in our group in terms of how much he could lift. And then it clicked and he went from being in the top five to being the strongest on the team.”

Both Max and Schum agree that however hard and grueling the work was at Club Fit, it paid off many times over on the field that fall. “If I could show you film from junior year to senior year, you’d think it was two different players,” said Schum. “He was another animal as a senior. He probably single-handedly won us two games from just his effort alone. And once you added in his size and speed and the strength he had gained from all the training, he had a great year.”

Max, for his part, agreed wholeheartedly. “I can’t even put it into words,” he said. “I had my best season by far and I completely attribute it to training with Russ.”

Now Max has a chance to give a little something back to Club Fit, having signed on as a camp counselor for the summer. “I’m looking forward to connecting with the kids in my group,” he said. “The same way that Russ took the time to know all the kids on the team, what makes them tick and who they are as a person. I want to be able to do that with my campers and make sure they all feel welcome.”

After the summer, Max will attend the University of Vermont and, while they don’t have a D1 football team, he says he’s very interested in joining the club football team.

For Schum, he was recently promoted to manager of personal training at Club Fit and continues to bring the same level of passion and dedication to training club members that he brought to working with Max. “It all comes down to knowing what you want,” he says of members wanting to achieve their fitness goals. “DJ was able to set a goal and say, ‘Coach, what do I need to do to have a great season and help this team,’ and he didn’t blink. He went after it. I think you have to be truthful to yourself, ask what it’s going to take and then go and attack it.”

As for his former student, he has no doubt that his success on the field is only the beginning. “Once he flipped the switch and turned it on, the things that he was capable of doing were amazing,” he said. “I’m looking forward to seeing what he accomplishes down the line. Because once the switch flips for that kid, the sky’s the limit.”

The Hiking Club

October 30, 2017 by jeanne

By Lisa Olney

Balancing the 24-7 responsibilities of everyday life while taking time for oneself can be as elusive as catching a cloud, and, often, the first casualties of this struggle are one’s own health, fitness, and sense of serenity. Experienced hiking leaders and Club Fit Jefferson Valley members Peter Meskin, Andrew Stein, and Michael Capsuto have the antidote, however, and it’s the longstanding Club Fit Hiking Club that has traversed the trails of the Hudson Valley for over two decades. A free activity for Club Fit members and their guests, hikes range from easy to challenging, and the only prerequisites are good physical condition, hiking boots, and a sense of adventure. The ability to combine exercise with the natural wonders of the Hudson Valley has never been easier … or more fun!

Peter Meskin is a former New York City high school English teacher whose innate gift for teaching earned him several awards for innovation in teaching his students desktop publishing in the days when computers were practically unheard of in the classroom. His inspiring teaching style still touches everything he does, whether in a classroom or in the great outdoors. The hiking bug first bit Meskin as a child growing up in Brooklyn, and as a young man, he went on day hikes with the American Youth Hostels hiking club throughout the Hudson Valley. Later, as a member of the Westchester Trails Hiking Club and the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC), he became a hiking leader and received extensive training from the AMC at the 1,800-acre Blue Mountain Reservation in Peekskill. Not limited to dry land, however, Meskin was also a sailing instructor for the New York Sailing School on City Island, received his Coast Guard Captain’s license, and had his own charter boat business in the British Virgin Islands. His hobbies also include sculpting in wood and stone along with photography, and he and his wife, Diane, volunteer at a humane society animal shelter and Guiding Eyes for the Blind where they foster puppies to help socialize the potential guide dogs at a young age.

22 years ago, Club Fit Jefferson Valley reached out to Meskin about creating a hiking club, and it was about this time that Meskin met fellow Club Fit member Andrew Stein. Another avid hiker who grew up in the Bronx, Stein has hiked all over the country including Alaska and the Rockies, and as a videographer he has documented some of his favorite experiences. Encouraged by friends to share his local hiking experiences, Stein decided to look into starting a hiking club. As if Mother Nature herself introduced these two, their meeting couldn’t have happened at a better time. “Andrew is a caring and engaged hiking leader and has hiked the local trails since he was a boy,” says Meskin. “He shares his vast knowledge of local history and lore with the hikers, and his friendly dog Molly accompanies him on the trails, greeting all of the hikers and giving them even more reasons to smile. Andrew has been very important to the success of the hiking club.”

Hand-picked from within the hiking club, Club Fit’s third hiking leader is Michael Capsuto, a Yorktown resident who has been hiking since childhood. Capsuto discovered the hiking club 10 years ago, and his vast knowledge of area trails along with his Red Cross certifications in adult first aid/CPR/AED make him a valued addition as a hike leader. “Michael has an intimate knowledge of the trails from many years of hiking with the Club Fit Hiking Club and on his own,” says Meskin. “He is a caring and compassionate person who only wants the best for our members.”

Meskin, Stein, and Capsuto all combine working out at Club Fit with their outdoor exercise routines and agree that daily exercise is the key to staying healthy. They can often be found in the cardio area on the treadmills and elliptical machines or in the strength training area using equipment like the FitLinxx circuit. “I’ve been working out at Club Fit since the 1980s,” says Meskin. “They are constantly reinventing themselves, integrating new exercise strategies and programs to keep everyone involved and motivated.” Combine that with the physical and mental benefits of hiking, and the result is a full mind-body workout that spells balance with a capital B.

The Club Fit Hiking Club is always ready to welcome newcomers and familiar faces, alike. Hikes take place all year long, ranging from easy to challenging. No sign-up is required, and as part of the Club Fit membership, all hikes are free to members and their guests. The next two hikes are November 4th at Teatown with a Teatown naturalist and November 12th at the Fahnestock Park Appalachian Trail.  To view a Hiking Club photo montage from Hike Leader Andrew Stein, click here. Happy hiking!
