Yes, Laughter IS Medicine!

We’ve all heard the old saying — “Laughter is the best medicine” — but it’s based in fact. As reported by The New York Times, a 2011 study published by The Royal Society of Oxford University found social laughter is correlated with an elevated pain threshold. Per the study findings, an integral component to the benefits was the social aspect involved. In other words, having fun with friends is good for you! Men’s Journal reports on some of the specific physical and mental benefits in 5 Ways Laughter Can Enhance Your Workout, including improved mood and increased cardio capacity. A study by Dr. Lee Berk, reported on by CNN, “suggests repetitive laughter can affect hormones in the same way that exercise does. An added bonus, per an article in Vanderbilt University Medical Center’s Reporter: “Ten to 15 minutes of laughter could increase energy expenditure by 10 to 40 calories per day, which could translate into about four pounds a year.”

But, most importantly, laughter is FUN! And we can always use more fun in our lives. So… we’ve planned another Comedy Night coming up at Club Fit! We’ll be hosting three hilarious professional comedians, including Linda Belt, Rich Carucci, and emcee Mike Jenkins. Linda has performed throughout the US and Canada and has been featured in a number of comedy festivals, including the Hogtown Comedy Festival (Toronto) the Detroit Comedy Festival, the Long Island Comedy Festival, The Women in Comedy Festival (Boston), Laugh Your Asheville Off, Asheville, NC and the Boston Comedy Festival. Rick, AKA “The Steamroller of Comedy,” is a second generation comedian whose grandfather was a vaudeville performer. Rich was a childhood actor who has been performing stand-up all across the country since 2001. He is also a regular on the New York City Comedy circuit. Former pro wrestler with Mike Jenkins  stormed on to the Comedy Scene in 2010. The “Mad Dawg of Comedy” brings a unique combination of madness, high energy and excitement wherever he takes the stage.
Tickets are available now for $30, but Club Fit members may purchase up to five tickets at a discounted price of $10 each.
