The Ashtanga system, a traditional system of yoga characterized by an established posture sequence, is the foundation for all Vinyasa yoga. It was taught in Mysore, India for over 50 years by Sri Pahhabhi Jois and continues to be taught there and worldwide after his passing by his students and his son, Manju Jois. At the core of Ashtanga is the linking of movement to rhythmic breath, emphasis on the bandhas for internal stability, and drishti (steady, directed gaze) for focus and concentration. Combining these three elements creates a therapeutic practice that is truly meditation in motion.
In this workshop, we will practice the foundational Ashtanga sequence (which begins with a comprehensive routine of standing poses and then focuses on increasingly challenging forward bends, binds and twists) and then explore the backbends and arm balances of the Ashtanga intermediate series, as well as the finishing series of inversions
