Note: Minimum of 4 participants required for the course to run. If less than 4 participants register for a course, you may choose to join a future class or be refunded in full. Refunds will not be issued to participants who do not pass the course.

2021 Lifeguard Training Course


Pre-Course Test: April 23: 5:00-6:00pm (Can either attend session 1 at 5pm or 2nd session at 5:30pm)
Course Day 1: Saturday, May 1st 9:00am-4:00pm
Course Day 2: Sunday, May 2nd 9:00am-4:00pm
Course Day 3: Saturday, May 8th 9:00am-4:00pm
Waterfront Module (Day 3): Saturday, May 8th 12:00-4:00pm


Club Fit is an authorized provider for the American Red Cross.

Purpose: The primary purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course is to provide entry-level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide professional-level care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services (EMS) personnel take over.

Age Requirements: Participants must be at least 15 years of age by the last scheduled day of the course and show proof of age at the pre-course test.

Basic Lifeguard Training Prerequisites:

  • Swim 300 yards, continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both, but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles may be used.
  • Tread water for 2 minutes, using only the legs. Candidates should place their hands under the armpits.
  • Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds:
    • Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. Swim goggles are not allowed.
    • Surface dive, feet-first or head-first, to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.
    • Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object and keeping the face at or near the surface so they are able to get a breath.
    • Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.

Waterfront Lifeguard Training Prerequisites:

  • Swim 550 yards, continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both, but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles may be used.
  • Tread water for 2 minutes, using only the legs. Candidates should place their hands under the armpits.
  • Complete a timed event within 1 minute and 40 seconds.
    • Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed.
    • Surface dive, feet-first or head-first, to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.
    • Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object and keeping the face at or near the surface so they are able to get a breath
  • Swim 5 yards, submerge and retrieve three dive rings placed 5 yards apart in 4 to 7 feet of water, resurface and continue to swim another 5 yards to complete the skill sequence.

Student Expectations:

  • Attend the entire course and participate in all class sessions.
  • Demonstrate competency in all required skills.
  • Successfully pass final written exams with a minimum grade of 80%.
  • Complete all seven hours of online learning.

Certificate Issued and Validity Period: The American Red Cross certificate for Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED is valid for 2 years.


2021 Course Fees:

Registration required one week prior to class start date.
All Lifeguard and Water Safety Instructor offerings are “Blended Learning Courses.” This means that a portion of the course will be taken online, prior to the start of the course. Upon completion of Blended Learning, you will be prompted to print your “training completion” record. Please bring this to the first day of your course.
