The Cranberry Lake Preserve is a 190 acre biodiversity park with numerous looping and intersecting trails which consists of a few gradual inclines and declines. The preserves rock terrain became an important harvest. From 1912 to 1917, the preserve was a quarry, furnishing rock and gravel to build the Kensico Dam, a part of the New York City’s water supply system. The quarry is now abandoned. Within the preserve area are a variety of habitats including a four acre lake, cliffs and scrubland, mixed hardwood forest, vernal pools, and a swamp.
Hike length: 3 miles
Hike time: 3.5 hours with lunch. Rain cancels.
Bring lunch and water.
No dogs allowed.
No need to register. Just show up.
Meeting Place:
From the Bronx River Parkway at the Kensico Dam in Valhalla, use Route 22 North. Once past the dam, make the first right onto Old Orchard Street and again the first right to enter the preserve.

Jim rediscovered the enjoyment of hiking after becoming a member of the Club Fit Hiking Group. He was a past member of the Appalachian Mountain Club. He has hiked throughout the United States and southern areas of Ireland. Jim resides in Somers with his wife and daughter since 2003.
