B “ Moderate “
Hike Leader: Jim Hurley
Call or Text: 917-885-0351
The hike will start from the Woodlands Trail, which is located by the nature center in the Lenoir Preserve parking lot. This trail leads to the Old Croton Aqueduct Trail, which we follow approximately 1 mile to the entrance for Untermyer Park.
The Untermyer Estate was known as Greystone when it was built in 1892 by John T. Waring, industrialist and philanthropist. The second owner was Samuel J. Tilden and the third owner, Samuel Untermyer, a lawyer, lived there for over 40 years. He bequeathed the estate in 1946 to Yonkers to be a public park. Since 2011, the Untermyer Gardens Conservancy has been working with the City of Yonkers to restore the gardens to their former glory.
Some points of interest at the Gardens are the broad stone staircase known as the Grand Stairway, the Temple of Love which was built for the wedding of Untermyer’s daughter, the Rhododendron Walk, the Ornamental Vegetable Garden and Orchard, the Walled Garden, and the Rock and Stream Garden. There are picnic tables where we will enjoy our lunch after surveying the gardens. Restrooms are also available.
We will then make our way back to the Old Croton Aqueduct Trail and proceed back to the Lenoir Preserve. The hike is labeled moderate because of the ascents and descents.
Comfortable boots are highly recommended.
